Scope and topics
The biennial international Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE) is designed to be a forum of excellence where a selected group of researchers, practitioners, and students will present and discuss their latest findings and results.
This event is committed to introduce innovative methodologies and technological resources recently employed to investigate the manifold aspects of the urban environment through orbital and airborne remote sensing data. Emerging topics like new methods for urban land cover and land use classification with detailed discrimination of urban targets, 3D modeling of urban buildings, forecast and impact assessment of natural and man-made hazards in urban areas, urban social studies, urban ecology as well as data fusion, algorithms and techniques for remotely sensed data interpretation, and multisource remote sensing data will be approached, aiming to address pressing questions and offer effective solutions in urban remote sensing but also to unravel new possibilities for the interpretation, processing, fusion, and application of remotely sensed data in urban investigations.

Previous conferences
The idea to organise an international workshop on urban remote sensing, jointly sponsored by IEEE GRSS (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society) and ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) was put in practice for the first time by the GRSS/ISPRS Joint workshop on'Remote sensing and data fusion over urban areas' (URBAN) held in Rome (2001). Editions of URBAN followed in Berlin (2003) and Tempe (2005). In parallel to these activities a series of workshops named 'Remote sensing of urban and suburban areas' (URS) were organized in Regensburg (1997, 2001, 2003), Istanbul (2002), and Tempe (2005). After the common workshop in Tempe (2005), the 4th GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on'Remote sensing and data fusion over urban areas (URBAN)' and the 6th International Symposium on 'Remote sensing of urban areas' (URS) were jointly held in Paris (2007). The meeting was named'Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event' (JURSE). The last JURSEs were held in Shangai (2009), Munich (2011) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (2013).

objectives of JURSE 2017
- Gathering people coming from industry, academia, local and national/international agencies together to discuss topics related to remote sensing for urban monitoring
- Fostering the research and the applications of available data sets over urban areas, with a special consideration for high resolution satellite data and data fusion
- Providing new ideas for developing sensors and/or systems able to analyse and monitor urban areas
- Improving the knowledge and the know-how by means of the interaction of researchers coming from different communities (town and regional planning, engineering, photogrammetry, geology, hydrology, etc)
- Urban remote sensing includes a wide array of research topics and disciplines, and arises as a truly interdisciplinary field. The joint conferences will feature many special sessions with oral and poster components.
